Sarasota, Florida – December 15, 2016 The Gulf Coast Ketamine Center has opened the first ketamine infusion therapy center to serve patients in the Sarasota-Manatee area. Founded by board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Steven Reichbach, the practice is located in the University Health Park Medical Campus at 2415 University Parkway, Building 3, Suite 215 in Sarasota, and offers low-dose ketamine infusions to combat treatment-resistant depression, chronic pain and a wide range of anxiety and mood disorders on an out-patient basis.

Ketamine is a drug that has been used for over 50 years in general anesthesia. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers it one of only two "essential drug" anesthetics that should be available in every country. Studies have found it to be a revolutionary treatment that is remarkably successful in patients when conventional modalities have not brought the desired effects. “Recent data suggest that ketamine, given intravenously, might be the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades,” said Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health.

Ketamine has been shown to be effective in up to 90 percent of patients with severe depression, PTSD and other mood disorders. Unlike most antidepressants – which can take weeks to begin working – many patients experience dramatic results from mood and depression symptoms after their very first ketamine infusion. “Through ketamine infusion therapy, we are offering people a safe and effective way to alleviate pain or debilitating depression in a compassionate and supportive environment,” said Lolita Borges, Clinical Director at Gulf Coast Ketamine Center. “Our goal is to help patients enjoy life once again.”

For those with chronic pain, ketamine can block and “reset” pain receptors in the brain and balance out important neurons and hormones by changing glutamate and GABA levels. This blocks the nerve channels that cause intense pain sensations, while still allowing the nerve to function normally. Infusion therapy at Gulf Coast Ketamine Center can help alleviate such conditions as chronic neck, back and joint pain; fibromyalgia; migraines; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS); and other forms of neuropathic pain.
