MANATEE COUNTY, FL (June 2, 2017) – Efforts to encourage redevelopment in some of Manatee County's aging areas have garnered statewide recognition.

The Florida Planning and Zoning Association has awarded Manatee County Urban Corridors Plan (UCP) with the 2017 Outstanding Long Range Plan award. County Commissioners approved the UCP and related changes last year in an effort to allow greater densities and building heights, encouraging mixed-use developments that combine retail, offices, residential  in walkable settings.

Manatee County Building and Development Services Director John Barnott praised Planning Section Manager Lisa Barrett and her team for the award.

"This is the culmination of hard work for the last five years," Barnott said. "Once our team assembled the final product it was unanimously accepted by Board of County Commission and we think it will pay huge dividends for our citizens and customers in Manatee County."

Lisa Barrett said the plan and recent Commission-approved changes will encourage the kind of development community leaders have envisioned for years.

"Through community efforts, goals of administration, hard work of staff and dedication of our elected officials, the Urban Corridor amendments came to fruition," Barrett said. "The Urban Corridors Project embodies sound planning and zoning practices sought in the planning of local urban communities not only within the State of Florida, but the entire nation."
