Community Engagement

In 2018, the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance has formed a committee focused on Community Engagement. This Committee works with our members and local partners to foster relationships and engage business members and their resources with local non-profit and community organizations to fulfill community needs.

If you are interested in helping us give back to the community, we encourage you to get involved and visit our next meeting. Committee details listed below:

Community Engagement Committee

Meeting Time: 1st Wednesday of Every Month, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Meeting Location: LWRBA Boardroom, 8430 Enterprise Circle, Suite 140, Lakewood Ranch

Time Commitment: 4-6 Hours per Month

Volunteer Opportunities

Sarasota School District Rockin' Reader Program

Sarasota County Schools Office of Community Involvement, in partnership with the TeamUP Volunteer and Partnership Council, is looking for volunteers with a passion for reading to commit one hour a week to read to two children in Kindergarten. You will receive a free training on how to be most effective while reading aloud to children. Reading to children is one of the most important factors in their future success and we want to set these children up to meet their full potential!

This Rockin' Reader opportunity will take place at Gocio Elementary School near Lockwood Ridge and University Parkway and Bay Haven school for Basics Plus near the Ringling art school.

Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

The Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading needs volunteers to join us as we prepare Kindergarten Readiness Bags for incoming kindergartners in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties.

These materials are designed for parent-child interactions to help the little ones transition between pre-k and kindergarten. Get a sneak peek into nearly 20 tools that help kids succeed in school. The cherry on top... hanging out with SCGLR is always a good time.

Judges Needed for stemsmart Student Summit

The Sarasota County School District is looking for additional judges for the STEMsmart Student Summit.  If you are interested, please email Lori Gentile at lgentile@edfoundationsrq.org.

Details:
Date: 1/24
Place: Suncoast Technical College
Time: 7:30-11:30 (might be finished earlier depending on the particular competition)

Judges needed for the following sessions:

Mathematics: Math Quiz Bowl

School teams of four (4) demonstrate knowledge of high school math skills,
team work, problem solving and time management skills by determining and
presenting the answers to questions clearly within a specific time frame.
Question topics will be based on content in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.

Exhibition: Engineering: TSA VEX IQ – Next Level

Using 2018 – 2019 TSA VEX IQ rules, teams compete for Excellence based on
demonstrated performance in Robot Skills Challenge, Teamwork Challenge and Design
Notebook.

Exhibition: C02 Dragster
Individual students will design, produce a working drawing for, and build a C02- powered dragster according to TSA specifications. There will be two divisions:  Middle School and High School.
Please note - This is an exhibition only and not a STEMsmart competition. Certificates will be issued to the top 3 dragsters in each division.
Exhibition: Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)

Description
This is an in-door exhibition event to introduce unmanned aerial systems safety and operations to the Sarasota School District.
Teams will demonstrate UAS operations and safety excellence based on demonstrated performance and documentation of Flight Log in UAS Skills Challenge.
• Skills Challenge – students demonstrate driving skills by completing tasks in the least
amount of time. There are up to four different skills challenge courses.
• Tetrathlon – students demonstrate driving skills and ability to multitask in a multiple skill
course with the least amount of time.
• Flight Log - Students provide Flight Log that lists date, flight times, skills practiced and
student operator.

Bonus Event: Model Water Tower
A team of two to four students will design and build a functioning, model water
tower that will hold at least one gallon of water at minimum elevation of 18
inches. For more information, please consult the AWWA Region X Model Water
Tower Competition Guidelines.

Education Foundation of Sarasota County

A key focus for the committee’s first year is to support early childhood reading initiatives in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The Education Foundation of Sarasota County enhances the potential of students, promotes excellence in teaching and inspires innovation in education, guided by strategic philanthropy.

Volunteer opportunity examples within the interest areas include:

  • College & Career Readiness - Career Chats speaker, Mentoring in Student Success Centers, Reviewing scholarship applications, Hosting a student workshop in a Student Success Center (i.e. interview skills, financial literacy, etc)

  • STEM & Innovation - STEMSmart Summit judge, #SRQHacks Hackathon mentor or judge

  • Teachers/Professional Development - Reading and scoring teacher-submitted grants

  • Special Events - Serving on event committees, Assisting with event-related planning and logistics
